Books, loverly books
Here's the thing. I've officially finished classes. I finished Screnzy too.

Now I have absolutely nothing to do.

SO.

Recommend me books! Anything. That's right, anything. Just name the book, give a brief description and why you like it and I'll love you all for ever.

Cheers!

Peter Pan in Scarlet
do not let the title deceive you
it's rather dark, especially for a youth book.
I inhaled this book over and over I absolutely love it.

I didn't like all the mistakes in it from Barrie's original stories. It's hard to be "official" when with mistakes. Check out this Peter Pan story:

For some reason, everybody and their mothers keeps telling me about this book, and I always forget about it until the next person comes along.

Here we go:

Crooked Little Vein - Warren Ellis
http://tinyurl.com/dh72cg

The Time Traveler's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger
http://tinyurl.com/d4and4

Soon I Will Be Invincible - Austin Grossman
http://tinyurl.com/cjmytg

People of the Book - Geraldine Brooks
http://tinyurl.com/dhpwok

The Truth About Stories - Thomas King
http://tinyurl.com/d7m8qn

It's difficult for me to write a little blurb about why each of these are great books, so I cheated and linked to cover descriptions. They are all, in my opinion, excellent reads.

Well, of course you'd recommend Warren Ellis.

The Thirteenth Tale--it's not perfect, but it's lovely.

Have you re-read all of Jane's work recently?

I think I might actually own the Thirteenth Tale, though I can't remember why I never read it.

I haven't read any Jane Austen in a while. I was in the book store the other day and they (Penguin, I think) released a whole set of new covers for a bunch of books including S&S and P&P.

I confess, I am a terrible Jane Austen fan because I have read all of them (re-read, even) except Emma and Persuasion.

Emma is hard to love. I just listened to an audio recording of it recently and didn't love Emma herself any more than usual (although I did have more empathy than in the past for her). On the other hand, Mrs. Bates is ridiculous and delightful. I think she contrasts well with Mrs. E. who is ridiculous but with a mean streak.

Persuasion is nothing but good from cover to cover--get on that!

I couldn't really get through Emma for that reason.

I got pretty far in Persuasion but Real Life got in the way, and I can't remember why I didn't pick it up again.

I'd ditto the Yiddish Policeman's Union, and add From The Notebooks of Dr. Brain (superhero satire with JLA and Avengers equivalents receiving psychotherapy) and The Song of Ice and Fire (huge four-volume epic fantasy series, but *really good* epic fantasy with Joss Whedon levels of "OMG, what did they just do to that character I love completely!!" and potentially zombie menace in the upcoming volumes)

I've heard about The Song of Ice and Fire... I'll have to look up From the Notebooks of Dr. Brain.

"A Game of Thrones" is good, however you must take breaks between the books. One volume flows into the next so seamlessly that it is unrelenting. Good stuff rarely happens to the characters you like. Ever. I couldn't get to the half-way point in "A Storm of Swords" (v.3) because the series just would not let up.

Also, George R.R. Martin is the slowest writer. Book five has been due out forever. Steven Erikson is the Canadian author of the The Malazan Book of the Fallen series, which is better fantasy from what I've read; and Erikson writes a helluva lot faster than GRRM.
